Coconut Husk into premium biochar project
Palawan, Philippines
Project Overview
Biocare has partnered with Lionheart with coconut plantations across the Pacific. The pyrolysis unit will be a significant upgrade from the current trial plant. It will process coconut husks from a local plantation and also service the local community assisting to manage waste residues while the coconut plantation matures.
Feed stock
The project feedstock consists of coconut husk residues from coconut plantations in the region.
Technology
Biocare is providing a bespoke high efficiency continuous pyrolysis reactor to meet carbon registry standards and increase scale of production.
Biomass and carbon removal potential
Lionheart Agrotech Limited owns Lionheart Farms Philippines Corporation, which operates a 2,500-hectare coconut farm in South Palawan, with more than 600,000 coconut palms already planted and a further 250,000 palms planned. The residue coconut husks and shells are typically open-burned and/or left to decompose naturally. As more waste becomes available, Lionheart is evaluating pathways for the sustainable management of this waste.
Project Carbon Removal Approach
Baseline scenario Open Combustion / Decomposition | Project scenario Biochar Production |
The coconut husks and shells, which are residues from their main operation, are typically open-burned and/or left to decompose naturally, releasing significant GHG emissions into the atmosphere. As more waste becomes available, Lionheart is evaluating pathways for the sustainable management of this waste. | In the biochar scenario, the coconut husks are collected, shredded, dried and pyrolysed into biochar, which is then packed in bags for ease of transport and application to soils. This will generate CDR* and sequester the coconut husk carbon for hundreds of years in addition to providing numerous co-benefits. |
